Pure Joy began with a simple impulse.
Matt was near the beach and wanted to build a wave.
The surfer followed.
He did not begin the Piece by assigning a larger symbolic story to it. What became important was movement — the figure coming through the wave rather than simply standing inside a sculpture.
That physical sense of motion shows up repeatedly in Matt's work. His characters tend to be caught doing something.
Pure Joy was completed in 2026 and measures 18 inches high, 16 inches wide and 12 inches deep.
It is available and can be seen in Oceanside, California, by appointment.
