Sean originally came in with a steel gate frame for his outdoor barbecue island. He was just looking for a piece of sheet metal to fill the opening, maybe with a few holes punched in it to make it look a little better.
While he was here, he started looking around at what I was building and some of the Pieces in the Gallery. Instead of just covering the opening with sheet metal, he asked me to do something fun with the space and left the frame with me.
I didn’t really start with a drawing or a set plan. I used rebar and steel plate and started building vines and leaves into the open space. I just kept working with it until the pattern felt right.
When we told Sean it was ready, he loved it and installed it that same day. After seeing it installed, he decided he didn’t want to powder coat it like he had originally planned. He liked the raw metal and the heat coloring, so it will come back to the shop for me to finish it that way.
For something that started out as a simple piece of sheet metal, it turned into something completely different.
